I've started with Dry skin which is a skin type rather than a skin condition (the difference is that you tend to have a predominate skin type such as dry or oily but them combined with a skin condition such as dehydration or sensitivity) and the various types and conditions can overlap so you may be oily but still suffering from dehydration. Anyway I will start with dry and briefly mention dehydration to help as a comparison but next weeks blog with go into dehydration more.
Fact: Dry skin is a lack of oil rather than water.
What causes it?
As it is a skin type it will be caused by mainly genetics, hormones or long term medication/health problems.
What are the signs of dry skin?
- The skin will look dull
- It may look/feel flaky or rough
- It's not plump
- Products tend to "sit" on the surface of the skin rather than absorbing (unlike dehydration where it will absorb product very quickly)
- It can be sensitive
- You can still get blackheads/spots with a dry skin, these would need to be treated as conditions, but don't think just because you get spots your skin is oily/combination.
- The skin can feel tight
What products to go for?
- You should be using rich products such as balms and oils.
- Look for words such as nourishing or rich.
- Don't use anything harsh such as high alcohol toners
- Soaps and foaming washes tend not to suit this skin type
