It can be difficult to get into a really good skincare routine especially if your unsure which order to use your products, I have put together a guide to help understand which way to layer your products to get the best results. There's a morning routine and an evening routine.
Morning Routine:
Your skin during the day needs protection. Your skin is exposed to high levels of stress caused by, make up, bacteria, UV exposure, pollutants, central heating, air con and various whether conditions so your skincare routine needs to reflect this.
1. Cleanse- as time is key in the mornings a quick easy cleanser is needed so a facial wash works well, you could do it in the shower to save time. Cleansing in the morning will clean the skin from previous night time products and bacteria and oil built up whilst asleep.
2. Tone- using an alcohol free toner to re balance the PH level of the skin
3. Optional Treatments- serums work well during the day as they’re lightweight and soak straight into the skin.
4. Eye products- again a lighter serum texture is good for the day
5. Moisturise- during the day lightweight textures work well and feel more comfortable on the skin
6. SPF!-This is really important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and remember all year round!!!
Evening Routine:
Whilst your asleep your skin is resting, so it’s all about repairing the skin after the stress from the day. It’s all about hydration and nourishment to replenish what’s been lost. Most people tend to have more time in the evening so it’s an opportunity to really treat the skin, I do my routine as soon as I get home in the evening otherwise I can be too tired to bother before going to bed.
1. Pre Cleanse- if you wear make up, remove it with either make up remover or micellar water or you can use your chosen cleanser twice.
2. Second Cleanse- Using a richer cleanser such as a balm is ideal on the evening to ensure your skin is thoroughly cleansed. Using a warm damp cleansing cloth really ensures all the cleanser is thoroughly removed (only use a cleansing cloth once before washing it, if you leave it at the sink, warm and wet, it’s a breeding ground for bacteria)
3. Tone- any time water has been on the skin a toner is essential to re balance
4. Optional Treatments- again to help with any particular concerns but especially beneficial at night time, an oil is good to really nourish the skin. If you want to layer more than one treatment as a rule go for the lighter texture first so use a serum first and then an oil.
5. Eye Products- on the evening go for richer more hydrating, if you decide not to use an eye cream in the day I would definitely suggest one for the night to keep the eye area looking youthful.
6. Night Cream- the reason night creams exist is because they have additional ingredients to help the skin replenish and tend to be richer, essential for when the skin is repairing.
