With literally hundreds of moisturisers on the market it can be so overwhelming to decide which one will suit you best and its such an important product to get right so here's a few tips to help you decide...
1. Determine What Your Skin Needs
So you have dehydrated/dry skin but small breakouts on the chin area, do you go for a moisturiser for combination/oily skin or one for dehydration? Look at your skin as a whole and decide what your main concern is ,maybe dryness, oiliness or sensitivity and pick a moisturiser to suit that. You can treat the breakouts on your chin with a more specific product just on that area. When you go to the beauty counter or salon for advice on skincare be as specific as possible to get the best advice.
2. Break Down Anti Ageing
"Anti Ageing" is such a overused and broad word to be used when it comes to skincare and so many of my clients want an anti ageing product or treatment but be more specific with what part of the ageing process is bothering you. Is it lines and wrinkles, sagging/lack of lift, dullness to the skin? If you really look at what the moisturiser is saying it will do you can break down whether it will treat what you want. Want it all? I don't feel one moisturiser can do it all so beware of magic creams claiming to completely erase all signs of anti ageing. If you feel that you need work on lines and wrinkles but also sagging to the skin then use a day cream to treat one and a night cream to treat the other to ensure your getting the most from your skincare.
3. Take Note of the Weather and your Lifestyle
Generally in the summer go for a lighter texture and in the winter something slightly richer. Bare in mind you working condition, do you work in an air conned office that leaves the skin dehydrated? Or outside all the time braving the elements? If so go for something more protective and hydrating during the day to help combat this, and on an evening something with calming and nourishing ingredients to soothe.
4. Don't feel the need to Chop and Change
If you find a moisturiser that you love and suits your skin then stick with it. Your skin is the largest but laziest organ so it does need a change in your routine every now and then to keep the skin stimulated but this doesn't necessarily need to be your moisturiser. You can add a serum underneath to give it a boost, change the face mask your using or introduce a night time facial oil. This will introduce different ingredients to the skin and treat another concern that your moisturiser isn't doing currently.
5. Price Point
There are products out there that have a huge price tag with no justification and also cheap products that are full of chemicals and nasties. But as a general rule go for the best skincare you can afford which will vary person to person. Some ingredients may appear the same in the cheaper product than the high end one but its about the quality and grade of that ingredient which will have a difference on the skin. A pure first grade rose oil will be active on the skin to do a job, a poor quality rose oil put into a product full of chemicals won't do a lot at all.
Here's a breakdown of the Elemis moisturisers as an example of how to treat the skin differently.
